How to Hold The Interest of Your Audience
Peaking and maintaining your audience's interest is challenging...
It can seem
like an impossible task to gain and maintain the interest of your target
audience but this is where that groundwork and research comes into its own and
really pays dividends.
If you have been watching my videos and reading my previous blog posts, you will now be very familiar with my mantra about knowing your audience but just in case you’ve managed to avoid it all completely (where have you been?!) I’ll do a quick re-cap but I’d also recommend looking back through some previous posts and videos on my social media.
So, basically, you really need to do your research…
Before launching your brand, you should know who you’re targeting:
oAre they male or female?
oHow old are they?
oWhat do they do for a living?
oWho do they live with?
oDo they own a home/rent/live with parents?
oHow many rooms in their property?
oWhat kind of car do they have?
oWhat’s their disposable income like?
oAre they sociable?
Where and when do they socialise?
Where and when do they spend their time online?
oDo they work?
Full time/part time?
oWhat’s their relationship status?
oHow do they dress?
oWhat do they spend their disposable income on?
oAre they family-oriented?
oDo they have pets?
oWhere and when do they holiday?
oHow often do they get their hair cut?
Some of this might seem a bit OTT and to be honest, depending on the kind of product or service you’re offering, some of this will be OTT but if you’re selling fashion or beauty products for example, all of this information will help to build a really clear picture in your mind of who you’re talking to. This is your IDEAL CLIENT AVATAR . You might have heard of this before or seen the acronym ICA dotted about in marketing circles.
It can seem like a LOT but it you can get all of this clear in your mind, you will be able to know what will peak and hold your target audience’s interest. It’s really important to be aware of the kind of person you’re trying to reach with your messages and content.
If you’re still not convinced let me demonstrate with a few examples - see below...

Imagine you are a beautician, thinking about your target audience or ICA:
- If you know they always (pre-COVID) go to the pub with their female friends on a Friday night, they’re likely to want their nails done for that.
- If you know they work a full-time job but still live at home with mum and dad, you know they’re likely to have a decent amount of disposable income, so they won’t be scraping together the pennies each time they want a facial.
- If they drive an Audi, the chances are they’re happy to spend a bit more if they know they’ll get the quality in return.
- If they work in events, they will likely want to have a number of beauty treatments regularly, you could put together a few monthly package deals.
- If they scroll through Instagram for inspiration for the latest beauty trends, make sure that is where you invest in your content marketing.
- If they like to holiday abroad in the biggest party places, they will likely want a full body slimming/toning/waxing/manicure/pedicure/eyebrow shebang treatment before they go. FIND OUT WHEN THEY GO and make sure your emails are hitting their inbox a good month or two before, reminding them to book their appointment with you.
So that’s the content and the where, now you just need to make sure it looks good, it’s easily digestible, accessible and varied.
Hopefully that’s enough to convince you. It’s simple really, knowing your audience means that you can effectively INTEREST your audience.
